Common Questions

Everything you need to know first.

Answers to the questions patients ask most often before their first appointment.

No, you do not need a GP referral to book an appointment at Atlas. We are a private clinic and you can book directly with us at any time. However, if you are using health insurance, please check with your insurer first as some providers do require a GP referral before they will authorise physiotherapy treatment.

Please wear or bring comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows access to the area being treated. For lower limb appointments, shorts are ideal; for shoulder or back problems, a vest top is helpful. You do not need to bring anything specific, but if you have any relevant imaging (X-rays, MRI scans) or medical letters, please bring these along as they can be very useful for your assessment.

The number of sessions varies considerably depending on the nature and duration of your condition, and your individual goals. Many acute injuries resolve with 3–6 sessions; chronic or complex conditions may require more. Connor will give you an honest, realistic estimate during your initial assessment, along with clear milestones so you can track your progress. We never recommend more treatment than is clinically necessary.

Yes, we accept most major health insurance policies, including AXA Health, Bupa, Aviva, Vitality Health, WPA, Cigna, and Simply Health. Please check with your insurer that you are authorised for physiotherapy treatment before your appointment and have your policy number and authorisation code to hand. We will provide you with an itemised receipt for all treatment.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles and most patients experience minimal discomfort — a slight aching or tingling sensation is common and is considered a normal therapeutic response. Injection therapy involves a small needle, and while you may feel a brief sharp sensation, Connor uses precise technique to minimise discomfort. A local anaesthetic is sometimes used. Any post-treatment soreness typically resolves within 24–48 hours.

We ask for at least 48 hours' notice if you need to cancel or rearrange. Cancellations between 24 and 48 hours of the appointment are charged at half the session fee. Cancellations within 24 hours, or missed appointments without notice, are charged in full. These terms are set out in the consent form you sign before treatment. We understand that emergencies happen and we'll always try to be flexible — please get in touch as early as you can if your plans change.
